We have recently received notice that Art Hernandez, one of the early NABF champions - he won our middleweight title in September of 1972 - passed away in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. Our condolences to the Hernandez family.
John B. Arum, 49 year old son of boxing promoter Bob Arum, was fatally injured as the result of a mountain climbing accident in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state. John was an environmental lawyer with the Seattle firm of Ziontz, Chestnut, Vornell, Berley and Slonim and was an experienced climber.
The NABF family extend our deepest sympathies to Bob and family as well to the entire Top Rank staff. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
I would like to advise all the members of the WBC Ring Officials Committee that on November 1, Monday afternoon, the date of the opening of the convention, there will be a full afternoon clinic that I will address personally in regards to judges and referees and that I will welcome all the questions and suggestions that the attendants make it.
This clinic will be also attended by the Board of Governors, the Executive Committee and any attendee that would like to participate.
On Tuesday, the second day of the convention, the referees' clinic will be as in the past, in the hands of Bruce McTavish and the judges' will be in the hands of our Ring Officials Honorary President Tom Kaczmareck.
I kindly ask you to please accept my best personal regards, hoping to see all of you at the convention, as I intend to have communication with all our ring officials, specially on Monday, November 1 afternoon.
Curtis Thrasher, our star referee, is a man of few words but exemplary actions; in the ring he´s beyond reproach. A good friend and a loyal member of the NABF, we thought you´d like to know a little more about him.
Why boxing? Curtis: Always had an interest in combat sport, boxed in Alaska in the early 80's
What is it about being a referee that attracts you? Curtis: A great way to be active and stay involved with the sport.
Any special moments you'd like to share?
Curtis: Just great times at conventions and nurturing boxing relationships.
Any difficult calls? How did you work through them?
Curtis: None really... ok well a few.
Do you think the seminars are useful?
Curtis:Yes, very much so to refresh and review is always good.
Do you think there should be an age limit or other qualifications not imposed?
Curtis:That's a tough call, but we would hope to know when enough is enough or one of our fellow officials would drop a hint.
What about a Federal commission?
Curtis:If done in a way that would not restrict the sanctioning bodies, and would provide uniform training.
How ia it working in countries other than USA?
Curtis:Great experience, working with different commisions abroad is always a great adventure... but when the bell rings it's still boxing.
Your life outside the ring?
Curtis:I have a wonderful wife of 23 years, I have great son 21 years old and a lovely daughter 17. I'm a General Foreman for an Outside Line Construction Company in Denver, Colorado.
Something you'd change about the sport?
Curtis: More public relations, our sport needs heros.
Advice to beginners?
Curtis: Spend time in the gym, choose good mentors.
FIGHT OF THE MONTH: Wilberth Uicab made the 6th defense of our flyweight title with a TKO 3 victory over Wm. de Sousa on August 6.
BOXER OF THE MONTH: We are pleased for the first time to name one of our female division boxers, Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea as our boxer of the month for winning the women’s featherweight title on July 30th.
I was happy to represent the NABF at the recent “ WBC Night of Champions” in Cardiff, Wales. The President's of all WBC Federations attended along with sixty three (63) former and present World Champions. Hats off to Mauricio Sulaiman, Tito Rodriguez,Alain Flores and Chuck Williams who did a great job putting the affair together.
06 August, Gimanisio Sport City, Cancun, Q. R. Mexico [Pepe Gomez, promoter]
Wilberth "Hurrican" Uicab made the 6th defense of his NABF flyweight belt a successful one when he defeated veteran William de Sousa who couldn't answer the bell for round 3 after receiving quite a pounding from Uicab in the first two stanzas. We wish Wilberth, our 2009-10 "Fighter of the Year" much success in his next fight - 17 September in Cancun - when he goes after the WBC Silver Belt against Edrin Dapudong.
The Night of Champions in Cardiff was a huge success. We want to applaud David Walker, Kevin Hayde, Chuck Williamsand their great group for the work they did in organizing this wonderful event. More than 60 champions showed up, awards were given, stories were shared, and World Boxing Cares and Sporting Chance visited many youth centers and hospitals and spoke to troubled teens. We also were pleased to see the premier of Risen, the film on Harry Winstone -- well done by Neil Jones. The NABF was proud to be a small part of this celebration of boxing.
In the co-feature, Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea (15-2, 9 KOs) won the NABF female featherweight title with a third round stoppage of Liliana Martinez (8-11, 4 KOs). Shea landed a heavy left hook to the body that doubled over Martinez who soon turned away in pain, forcing the referee to stop the fight at the 1:18 mark.
The NABF fight of the month for July, 2010 is Fernando Guerrero winning by unanimous decision, in a highly competitive fight, over Ishe "Sugar Shay" Smith to become our new middleweight champion. Both men fought hard from start to finish with Guerrero seemingly just a tad quicker and able to withstand Smith's rib rattling body attack to bring home the belt. Televised from the DeSoto Civic Center in Southhaven, Mississippi (just across the river from Memphis), the Prize Fight Promotions show was televised as the main event on the July 16th Sho-Box show on the Showtime network. Congratulations to both boxers for an entertaining fight.
Joe Dwyer and the NABF would like to welcome Alexis Arguello, Jr. to our Team. He will be in charge of Champion Relations. His intimate knowledge and connection to the sport, and his fluid Spanish, makes him a great asset.
Our boxer of the month is Vanes Martirosyan who made the second successful defense of our super welterweight championship on June 5th pounding out a 10r unanimous decision over highly regarded Joe Greene. This was a televised undercard bout over HBO on the Cotto/Foreman card from Yankee Stadium.
